What metadata can I edit?

You can view and edit the standard PDF document properties: Title, Author, Subject, Keywords, Creator (the application that created the document), and Producer (the application that converted it to PDF). You can also view but typically not edit dates like creation date and modification date, as these are generated by the PDF library during processing.

Can I remove all metadata?

Yes, you can clear all metadata fields to produce a document with no author, title, or identifying document properties. This is useful when sharing documents externally and you do not want to reveal who created the document or what software was used. For more thorough privacy, also use the Remove Metadata tool which strips XMP metadata in addition to standard properties.

Why would I want to edit PDF metadata?

Metadata serves several practical purposes. Accurate titles make documents easier to find in search results and document management systems. Keywords improve discoverability. Author information establishes attribution. For published documents, professional metadata also improves the document's accessibility for screen readers and assistive technology that uses the title field.

Does editing metadata change the document content?

No, metadata is stored separately from the visible page content. Editing, adding, or removing metadata has no effect on the text, images, formatting, or any other content you see when viewing the document. The visual appearance and reading experience of the PDF are completely unchanged regardless of what metadata changes you make.

Is XMP metadata the same as document properties?

XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) metadata and standard PDF document properties overlap significantly but are stored in different locations within the PDF. Standard document properties are in the PDF's Info dictionary, while XMP metadata is an XML block embedded in the file. This tool edits the standard document properties. To remove XMP metadata as well, use the Remove Metadata tool.
